З історії українських досліджень Океанії: мореплавець Василь Хромченко (I пол. XIX ст.)

Abstract

Мета статті – розширити уявлення наукової спільноти про участь українців у географічних відкриттях, що реалізовано через дослідження біографії мореплавця Василя Хромченка (1792–1849) та висвітлення його тихоокеанських обстежень. Використано методи: біографічний, генеалогічного пошуку, історіографічного аналізу та порівняльно-історичний. Залучено рукописні родовідні документи й послужні списки, що зберігаються в архівах Чернігова, Києва, Петербурга і Брянська. Неопублікований і важкодоступний географічний доробок відтворено й проаналізовано на основі інформативних матеріалів, що містяться в тогочасній періодиці та працях сучасників В. Хромченка. Наукова новизна полягає в розгляді постаті дослідника та його океанографічних здобутків у контексті історії та інтелектуальної спадщини українців, у визначенні пріоритетності В. Хромченка у світовому вивченні низки островів і суходолів та картографуванні центральної частини Тихого океану. У висновках закцентовано на ймовірному походженні В. Хромченка з козацького стану Стародубщини; на обставинах і зумовленості переходу частки цієї суспільної верстви у військові та цивільні структури Російської імперії; на науковій вартості його обстежень Океанії для географічної картографії та геології.The purpose of the article is to expand the scientific communityʼs understanding of the involvement of Ukrainians in geographical discoveries, through the study of the biography of navigator Vasyl Khromchenko (1792–1849) and his exploration of the Pacific Ocean. The methods used include biographical and genealogical research, historiographical analysis, and comparative-historical analysis. Manuscript pedigree documents and service records stored in the archives of Chernihiv, Kyiv, St. Petersburg and Bryansk were used. The unpublished and difficult-to-access geographic work is reproduced and analyzed based on the informative materials found in contemporary periodicals and the works of V. Khromchenkoʼs congeneraries. The scientific novelty is in the consideration of this figure and his oceanographic achievements in the context of the history and intellectual heritage of Ukrainians, in defining the researcher's priority in the world study of a series of islands and continents, and in the mapping of the central part of the Pacific Ocean. The conclusions focus on the probable origin of V. Khromchenko from the Cossack estate of Starodubshchyna, on the circumstances and causes for the transition of a part of this social class to military and civilian structures of the Russian Empire, and on the scientific value of his exploration of Oceania for geographical cartography and geology.
