Abstract

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) is a secreted glycoprotein that regulates the degradation of the low-density lipoprotein receptor. Single nucleotide polymorphisms in its gene associate with both hypercholesterolemia and hypocholesterolemia. The identification of PCSK9 regulation by these various treatments is important in understanding of the physiological function of this protein, and points to new targets for therapeutic treatments to increase hepatic LDLR numbers.
