Історія приміських трамвайних ліній Києва. III. Деміївський трамвай

Abstract

Стаття присвячена історії Деміївського трамвая — приватного транспортного підприємства в передмісті Києва - Деміївці, що функцiонувало з 1908 по 1920 рік.

The subject of the article is the Demievka tram, a private enterprise in Demievka, a suburb of Kiev, founded in 1908 by two local entrepreneurs, David Margolin and Mark Brodsky. Tram service on the first line began in June 1911, with two more lines added during subsequent years. Since 1916, the Demievka tram shared one of its tracks with a narrow-gauge railway, a unique situation for Kiev. In 1915 the city of Kiev had decided to purchase the enterprise from Margolin, by then its sole owner, but afterwards it backed out of that decision. Eventually, in late 1917 Margolin sold it to Solomon Gerenrot. Until 1916, the enterprise was profitable. From 1917, rising wages and costs accompanied by the impossibility to raise fares accordingly caused it to start losing money. Tram service was discontinued in September 1918. The enterprise was not completely dissolved; in fact, it continued to function, but only as a provider of electric power for a few local residents and establishments, working on a “cash-only” basis. An intention to restore tram service, with adequate fares, was alive until at least the end of 1919, but it never materialized. Only in 1926 did service along the main line begin once again, as part of the unified Kiev tram network. That line functioned until its ultimate shutdown in 1980.
