Abstract

The article focuses on the life, scientific and creative work of the outstanding scholar I. I. Mechnikov who was born and grew up in Ukraine. It highlights his main achievements and discoveries such as substantiation of intracellular digestion, formulation of phagocytic theory of immunity, identification of the essence of inflammation, doctrine of antibiotics, development of the concept of longevity. The contribution of his works to the development of zoology, embryology, microbiology, immunology, gerontology is revealed. His fundamental scientific works are examined.
