The theory of bi-Hamiltonian systems has its roots in what is commonly referred to as the “Lenard recursion formula”. The story about the discovery of the formula told by Andrew Lenard is the subject of this article.
We wish to thank Peter Olver for his careful reading of the manuscript and constructive comments. The first author (JP) would like to express his gratitude to fellow graduate students Caroline Adlam, Denis Falvey, Josh MacArthur, John Rumsey, and Jin Yue for the stimulating atmosphere and useful discussions. The research was supported in part by a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Discovery Grant (RGS).
