Текстологический анализ изменения содержания понятия «джентльмен» в английской культуре

Abstract

Настоящая статья посвящена исследованию изменения содержания понятия «джентльмен», основанному на диахронном принципе на материале прецендентных текстов английской литературы. В ходе социального и культурного развития общества, под воздействием экстралингвистических факторов происходит изменение содержания понятия, которое встраивается в культуру. Изменения содержания понятия «джентльмен», реализованное в художественных текстах, помогает понять менталитет народа, его культуру и традиции, а также осуществлять диалог культур.Справжня стаття присвячена дослідженню зміни змісту поняття «джентльмен», заснованому на диахронном принципі на матеріалі прецендентних текстів англійської літератури. В ході соціального та культурного розвитку суспільства, під впливом екстралінгвістичних факторів відбувається зміна змісту поняття, яке вбудовується в культуру. Зміни змісту поняття «джентльмен», реалізоване в художніх текстах, допомагає зрозуміти менталітет народу, його культуру і традиції, а також здійснювати діалог культур.The article is devoted to the research into the changes of the contents and meaning of the concept “gentleman”. The analysis is based on the diachronic approach on the material of the precedent texts of English literature. The concept is a thought or a systems of thoughts that reflect and generalyze the quality, characteristics, links among the phenomena, objects and their basic linquistic characteristics and lexical, semantic relations as a result of a long process of cognition; it is a condensed expression of historically perceived knowledge. The text realizes and objectifyses the changes in the scope and meaning of the concept on the basis of extralinguistic factors in the course of social and cultural development. The study and analyses of such literary resources as “Beowulf”, works by Chaucer, Shakespeare, Defoe, Eliot, Trollop, Bronte, Austen, Lawrens, etc. revealed that initially “gentleman” meant a noble man, a landowner. In the course of the time it began to include such meanings as: honest man, moral man, the man who keeps his word. With the social, political, economic and cultural changes in the country the concept “gentleman” began to include: a well educated, well-mannered, short-spoken, not emotional man, who has no need to earn his living. The research into the processes and courses of changes in the meaning and contents of the concept “gentleman” helps to understand the mentality of the people, the culture and traditions and thus enables to conduct cross cultural dialogues.
