Шептуха як магічна консультантка: передача знань і специфіка надання послуг (за експедиційними матеріалами з північної Чернігівщини)

Abstract

У статті аналізується сучасний стан побутування уявлень про магічних консультантів на матеріалах експедицій до Семенівського та Новгород-Сіверського районів Чернігівської області. Автор ставить за мету виявити практики передачі знань і надання послуг, які усталилися в повсякденному дискурсі знахарства за останні десятиліття. Окреслюються способи передачі практичних знань включно з прескрипціями та ритуалізованими діями, які їх супроводжують. Серед особливих етапів сеансу варто виокремити такі: підготовчі читання «Отче наш» і звернення до святих; проведення ритуалізованої практики з лікувально-магічною метою; ритуал подяки за роботу магічного консультанта; проводжання клієнта; відновлення стану шептухи після завершення роботи з клієнтом. Немедичні спеціалісти зберігають у своїх практиках як традиційні уявлення, так і піддаються адаптації до сучасних реалій, особливо в контексті практик подяк і передачі знань.

The article analyzes the current state of existing ideas about magical counselors on the materials of expeditions to Semenivska and Novhorod-Siversk districts of Chernihiv oblast. The article aims to identify the practices of knowledge transmission and providing services that have become established in the everyday discourse of healing in recent decades. The ways of transmission of practical knowledge are outlined. The article deals with examining the prescriptions and ritualized actions that accompany those practices. There are several special stages of the healing session such as: preparatory stage – praying “Our Father” and appealing to the saints; conducting ritualized practices for therapeutic and magical purposes; gift-giving and thanksgiving ritual for the work of a magical counselor (including loaf of bread, sweets, sometimes money), parting with the client (praying, putting a cross on them and the doors or the gates), recovery after finishing the healing session. This may include special prayers, drinking holy water, going to the church mess, laying of the knife, etc. In healing practices Ukrainian whisperers both retain traditional beliefs and adapt to modern realities. There have been some significant changes in the practices of gratitude and knowledge transmission. For example, during healing sessions, “sheptukhas” (whisperer) continue to use Ukrainian traditional apotropaic, such as spitting, burning diff erent objects which are used during the rituals (salt, candles, linen cloths), metal objects, and prayers. The transformation in knowledge transmission can be seen in using handwritten notebooks. A significant percentage of interviewed healers keep those notebooks with prayers recorded there, which were once dictated by other magical counselors and passed on to them in this way. This kind of transmission is relatively new for Ukrainian traditional healers due to a belief that written prayers have less power or do not help their clients at all.
